SJPD Investigates In-Custody Death

On May 25, 2023, at approximately 2:00 AM, an Officer was at O’Conner Hospital guarding an adult male suspect in custody for violating a court order. The suspect had been admitted to the hospital for a preexisting medical condition. The suspect assaulted the Officer and threatened to strike the Officer and a nurse with a metal oxygen tank.

Two Hospital security guards and the Officer entered the room to prevent the suspect’s escape. The suspect fell approximately 20 feet from the ledge, resulting in life-threatening injuries. Officers and Hospital staff provided immediate medical care. The suspect was transported to a different trauma hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.
