4 killed in wrong-way driver crash in Chino Hills

CHINO HILLS, Calif. – Four were killed in a wrong-way driver crash in Chino Hills early Sunday morning, according to authorities.

CHP received multiple 911 calls about a wrong-way driver traveling northbound in the southbound lanes on the 71 freeway at Central Ave. around 2:30 a.m.

Additional 911 calls were received of a 4 to 5-vehicle traffic collision with one vehicle on fire and people trapped inside on the southbound, 71 freeway at Chino Hills Parkway.

An SGT from the California Highway Patrol Rancho Cucamonga station was the first on the scene and attempted to put out the fire and saved occupants inside the vehicle. The SGT wasn’t able to get to the occupants inside the car fire due to the car being fully engulfed.

The Chino Valley fire department arrived on the scene and was able to put out the car fire.

A total of four people were pronounced dead at the scene by firefighters and paramedics. One person was transported to a local hospital in an unknown condition.

Their identities are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

UPDATE: One Killed in San Pablo Crash and Car Pileup

The driver of a black Honda CRV died early Saturday when his vehicle flipped, resulting in a multi-car pileup on Interstate 80 eastbound in San Pablo, as reported first by CCAR.

According to CHP Officer Adib Zeid, the first reports that reached the agency before six in the morning suggested that one vehicle had overturned on eastbound I-80 at the San Pablo Dam Road exit. He claimed that the driver got out of his car but was killed by another vehicle after being hit.

Before CHP arrived on the scene, a number of additional vehicles collided with the overturned vehicle, but no additional injuries were reportedly suffered.

The damaged CRV ended up lying on its roof, upside down, in the center of Interstate 80.

The investigation and cleanup following the crash forced a complete shutdown.
