On Thursday, September 5, 2019 at approximately 11:55 a.m., officers responded to a report of a traffic collision in the area of Los Coyotes Diagonal and Stearns Street involving a vehicle versus a bicyclist, which resulted in the death of a male adult.
Upon arrival, officers discovered that the collision occurred on Los Coyotes Diagonal north of Stearns Street. The collision involved a vehicle versus a bicyclist with the bicyclist being critically injured. Long Beach Fire Department personnel rendered aid to the injured party and transported him to a local hospital in critical condition.
The preliminary investigation revealed the collision occurred when the bicyclist was traveling eastbound across the number one lane of northbound Los Coyotes Diagonal when a 2000 Honda Civic, traveling northbound in the number one lane of Los Coyotes Diagonal, struck the bicyclist.
The driver of the Honda Civic, a 19-year-old resident of Los Angeles, remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. The driver has a valid license, was not impaired, was not distracted and was not injured.
On September 7, 2019, the Long Beach Police Department was notified that the bicyclist had succumb to his injuries at a local hospital.
The bicyclist is only being identified as an 82-year-old male resident of Long Beach, pending notification to next of kin.
