On Jan. 27, 2022 at approximately 6:22 a.m., officers were dispatched to the area of Cherry Avenue and 15th Street regarding an injury traffic collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian, which later resulted in the death of a male adult pedestrian.
Upon arrival, officers found a 2007 Audi which had struck a pedestrian. Officers located the pedestrian who was being treated with life-saving measures by the Long Beach Fire Department. The Long Beach Fire Department transported the pedestrian to a local hospital for further treatment. The pedestrian was listed in stable condition by medical personnel.
The preliminary investigation revealed the 2007 Audi was traveling southbound on Cherry Avenue through a green light at 15th Street when the pedestrian began to cross Cherry Avenue, eastbound in the south crosswalk against the “Don’t Walk” sign. The 2007 Audi was unable to stop or avoid striking the pedestrian.
The pedestrian was identified as John Kim, a 58-year-old male resident of Long Beach. On Feb. 20, 2022, the Long Beach Police Department was notified of the passing of John Kim.
The driver of the Audi was identified as a 32-year-old male resident of Long Beach who stayed on scene and cooperated with the investigation. Distracted driving, impaired driving, and speed were not believed to be a factor at the time of the collision.
The investigation is ongoing.
