On Friday, Jan. 8, 2021 at approximately 5:35 a.m., officers were dispatched to the area of Del Amo Boulevard and Cherry Avenue on a report of a traffic collision with unknown injuries, which resulted in the death of a female adult.
Upon arrival, officers discovered a driver of a 2002 Toyota Camry appeared to have lost control and struck a temporary fence on the east sidewalk of Cherry Avenue, just north of the intersection of San Antonio Drive. While assessing the scene, officers discovered an unresponsive female adult amid the debris. Officers immediately began life-saving measures and called for Long Beach Fire to respond. The Long Beach Fire Department responded, but despite life-saving measures, the female adult succumbed to her injuries at the scene.
It is believed the female victim was experiencing homelessness and was possibly asleep on the sidewalk at the time of the collision.
The male driver and a female passenger were seen fleeing the area on foot immediately after the collision. The driver failed to remain on-scene or render assistance to the victim, in violation of section 20001(a) of the California Vehicle Code. The vehicle was located at the scene.
The identity of the victim and notification of next of kin will be made by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.
