Teslas involved in 10 deadly crashes

Eleven people died crashes involving automated cars during a four-month period earlier this year, according to information recently released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

In addition to the Teslas, one of the deadly crashes involved a Ford pickup truck. Although, it’s unclear whether automation played a role in the wrecks, the government report puts a spotlight on safety concerns as automated vehicles skyrocket in popularity.

The 11 crashes between  mid-May and the end of September were released with other statistics on Monday.

The report renewed concerns over whether automated vehicles are safe for others on the road, especially motorcyclists.

Man Sitting in Car Killed in Hayward Crash

HAYWARD — Just before 3 a.m., a man sitting inside a car near the intersection of  W. Winton Avenue and Thunderbird Place was killed when a vehicle crashed into his.

The driver and a passenger of that vehicle initially left the scene, but later returned to cooperate with police. They have not been arrested, according to published reports.

Hayward police stated they found the man unconscious. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has yet to be released.

Driver dies when car crashes off road in Corona

A 42-year-old driver died and two passengers were taken to the hospital in a single-car crash Monday.

The crash occurred at about 6:15 p.m. on Smith Avenue north of Pomona Road, according to published reports. Police believe the car was going south on Smith Avenue when it veered off the road. The car collided with a water pipe.

Two passengers sustained what authorities described as significant, but not life-threatening injuries. They were a 36-year-old woman and 52-year-old man.

Solano County Coroner IDs Cordelia crash victim

The Solano County Coroner identified the motorist, who died early Saturday, when his vehicle drove off Interstate 680 near Gold Hill Road in Cordelia.

Kingsley Duru, a 20-year-old Antioch man and native of Nigeria, died at 7:40 a.m. after his vehicle smashed into a tree.

Duru’s was engulfed in flames. He was trapped inside. Authorities pronounced him dead at the scene, according to published reports.

6 injured in Hemet DUI-crash

Six people had just left a party at a Hemet home, when a drunken driver struck them, pinning two of the victims below his pickup truck.

The truck then smashed into their nearby car, before coming to a rest. The crash happened on a residential street slightly before 11 p.m. near Girard Street and Menlo Avenue.

A car jack had to be used to lift the pickup truck off one  victim, according to published reports.

The victims sustained injuries that ranged from moderate to serious, but all were expected to survive. The youngest victim is just six-years-old, according to published reports.

Kody Ray Cihal was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, child endangerment and other crimes. Information on Cihal’s city of residence was not immediately available, but he is estimated to be in his 40s.

Riverside collision sends CHP officer to hospital

A California Highway Patrol officer and motorist were injured when their vehicles collided in Riverside early Friday. car crash in Riverside on Friday

The crash at  Van Buren Boulevard and Trautwein Road happened at  around 2:30 a.m.

According to CHP: The officer was driving west on Van Buren, when a vehicle in the eastbound lane turned left into his path. Both the officer and other motorist were taken to the hospital and later released, according to published reports.

Hijacked Amazon Van Crashes to a Halt After GPS Tracking, Four-Mile Chase and Shooting in Fontana

An Amazon delivery van was making its rounds in the 15200 block of Fontana’s Whittram Avenue a little after 11 a.m., when it was hijacked at gunpoint.

The hijackers sped off before being tracked down by the van’s owner and a GPS system near Lime and Valencia avenues. Confronted by the owner, Harold Brown, 29, of Fontana, opened fire, before taking off in the stolen Amazon van again.

Police joined in the chase, that lasted about four miles before Brown crashed the van a final time near the intersection of Citrus Avenue and Ceres Avenue, according to published reports.

After ditching the Amazon van, Brown forced his way into a nearby home. He was eventually arrested by police and transported to a local hospital for injuries he sustained in the crash.

Brown was arrested on suspicion of carjacking, failure to yield, assault with firearm and other charges. His bail was set at $250,000.

CHP Pursuit Ends in Crash on 91 Freeway in Long Beach

California Highway Patrol arrested four suspects at the conclusion of a pursuit Tuesday morning that started in the San Gabriel Valley and ended in a crash on the 91 Freeway in North Long Beach.

A burglary just before 7 a.m. in Walnut was interrupted by Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies. The alleged burglars, hopped in a BMW to make a get away.

After some close calls – and miles of driving the BMW on a sparking wheel- the pursuit came to its end at about 8:30 a.m. when the BMW crashed into the back of a semi-truck on the westbound 91 Freeway, near Downey Avenue. Four suspects in the BMW were arrested.

Suspected Drunken Driver Remains Free After Crash that Killed San Lorenzo Man

Authorities identified the man who died in a crash on Interstate 680 in Pleasanton last month.

Jamari Ross, of San Lorenzo, was killed when the Mercedes Benz he was riding in flipped over a cement barrier on Interstate 680 at about 5:45 a.m. on Sept. 10. Ross was thrown from the Mercedes. He died at the scene.

The driver, a Stockton woman, was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving.  She admitted to driving the vehicle and tested at nearly 50 percent higher than the legal limit, according to published reports. She told police that hours before the crash, she had done tequila shots with Ross at a Stockton night club. She has yet to be charged with a crime stemming from the deadly crash, according to published reports.
