The single-vehicle crash happened about 8:30 p.m. on Spruce Street between the railroad tracks and the 91 Freeway.

Technicians at McAfee placed tape horizontally across the middle of the “3” on a 35 mph sign. The change caused the vehicle to read the limit as 85 mph, and its cruise control system automatically accelerated.
