On February 17, 2018, at about 10:05 p.m., officers responded to the area of Atlantic Avenue and Atlantic Place regarding a traffic collision, which resulted in the death of a male adult.
Officers arrived on scene and discovered there were two vehicles involved. Both vehicles had major front end collision damage.
The preliminary investigation determined a 2016 Chevrolet Cruze, driven by a 27-year old male from Los Angeles, was traveling south on Atlantic Place. The driver failed to negotiate a turn at the end of the roadway and drove over a raised median and into the northbound lanes of Atlantic Avenue.
The Chevrolet collided with a 2014 Toyota Corolla, driven by a 24-year old male from Compton, with his 20-year old female passenger from Los Angeles, while they drove north on Atlantic Avenue.
The collision resulted in the death of the driver of the Chevrolet. He was determined deceased at the scene by Long Beach Fire personnel. Identification of the driver is being withheld pending the notification of the next of kin.
Both occupants of the Toyota were transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.
Alcohol intoxication is not believed to be a factor in the collision. The investigation is ongoing.
