On November 11, 2018, at approximately 3:00 p.m., Long Beach Jail detention officers’ attention was drawn to a male inmate yelling in one of the communal cells due to an altercation between inmates.
Detention officers heard one inmate yelling that another inmate was attacking and biting him, and immediately intervened. Detention officers used verbal commands in an effort to stop the attack, and when the inmate refused to comply, he was tased. Detention officers were able to gain control of him, however shortly thereafter, the subject became unresponsive.
The jail nurse was already on scene and prepared to start rendering aid when the Long Beach Fire Department arrived and began performing life-saving measures. The subject was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
The inmate who was assaulted was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The deceased inmate has been identified as 25-year-old Alan Alfredo Ramos of Long Beach.
The official cause of death will be determined by the Los Angeles Coroner’s Office.
As with any in-custody death incident, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office responded to the scene and will be conducting an independent investigation.
