CHINO HILLS >> Two people were injured and taken to hospitals Friday morning after a car rear-ended a school bus on the 71 Freeway, near Pine Avenue in Chino Hills, and ended up wedged under the bus, California Highway Patrol and Chino Valley Fire District officials said.
No students were on board the small bus when the crash took place just before 7:30 a.m., authorities said.
The man who was driving a small white sedan, which collided with the bus, suffered major injuries in the crash.
Using the jaws of life, firefighters worked for more than an hour to pull the man out of the crumpled vehicle. He was flown to Arrowhead regional Medical Center in Colton with blunt force trauma to his head.
A woman who was a passenger in the school bus was also hurt and transported to Chino Valley Medical Center in Chino. The bus driver was uninjured.
Four people in a third vehicle sustained minor injuries, according to a CVFD statement, but they declined medical attention.
The southbound lanes of the freeway were shut down for more than two hours. Traffic was diverted onto Pine Avenue, according to CHP officials.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
