FONTANA >> A bicyclist who died after being struck by a suspected drunken driver early Wednesday morning has been identified by authorities.
Rafael Macias Herrera, 67, of Fontana, died after he was struck by a car that police say was driven by Felipe Martin, 29 of Hawthorne, who was suspected of driving while under the influence.
Just after midnight, Martin was driving a gray 1999 Honda Accord east on Foothill Boulevard, near Sultana Avenue, when he crossed the white line on the edge of the road, striking Herrera who was traveling in the same direction on a bicycle, police officials said in a news release Wednesday.
Herrera landed on the hood of the car. But when the car struck a light pole, Herrera was catapulted about 40 feet onto the pavement, officials added.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Martin was arrested and booked into West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga on suspicion of drunk driving and vehicular manslaughter. He’s being held in lieu of $100,000 bail.
