UPLAND >> A smartphone helped prevent a robbery Thursday, in Upland by showing a homeowner three potential burglars on his doorstep, police say.
The kicker? The homeowners weren’t anywhere near the house.
Upland police officers were called to a house in the 1900 block of North Wilson Avenue about 9:15 p.m. on a report that someone was trying to break into a home, according to a news release from the Upland Police Department.
The caller turned out to be the out-of-town homeowner who has a camera on his doorbell that feeds to his smartphone. A suspect rang the doorbell and was seen looking through windows, the release said.
Officers arrived and saw the suspect get into a vehicle with two other people inside.
The car took off and officers pursued them to the intersection of 19th Street and North Mountain View Avenue, about a half-mile from the home, the release says. There, the suspects ran a red light and slammed into another car, causing that car to flip.
Police believe three men inside the suspect vehicle are from the Pasadena area. Norbin Chavez and Juan Lugo, both 18, were arrested along with a 17-year-old. The release does not detail what they’re suspected of. Neither Lugo nor Chavez show up in San Bernardino County jail records.
Back at the house, officers found a broken window, which they say confirms the burglary.
The driver in the car they crashed into only complained of pain and was treated at the scene.
