POMONA >> The Pomona police officer whose motorcycle collided with an SUV as the officer was on his way to help investigate a fatal crash earlier this month is slowly recovering from his injuries, officials said.
“He is improving and all signs are positive,” Sgt. Bert Sanchez said Tuesday about Officer Trevor Stevenson.
Around 6:30 a.m. Jan. 10, Stevenson was on his way to a fatal crash that killed a pedestrian on North Garey Avenue north of the 10 Freeway when a gray SUV traveling south turned left in front of the officer at North Garey and Garfield avenues.
Stevenson suffered major head trauma and was taken to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center, according to California Highway Patrol officials.
Stevenson, a nine-year veteran of the department with a total of 12 years of law enforcement, is expected to undergo facial reconstruction surgery Tuesday, according to a posting from the Rialto Police Department Community Outreach Program.
A fundraiser for Stevenson and his family is planned for 6 p.m. Jan. 27 at Old Stump Brewing Co., 2896 Metropolitan Place in Pomona. A spaghetti dinner will be provided by Vince’s Spaghetti for a $10 donation.
