Man gets 15 years in DUI fatal because judge had already warned him about driving drunk

POMONA >> An Alhambra man was sentenced Monday to 15 years to life in prison for driving drunk, while on probation for DUI, and triggering a crash on the 210 Freeway in Claremont that killed a 27-year-old Las Vegas man.

Ryan Munoz, 40, was convicted of second-degree murder Sept. 30 for the June 28, 2014, collision that killed Gevork Krpikyan.

Munoz was prosecuted for murder because he had been warned about driving drunk when put on probation for a 2012 DUI conviction.

He was westbound on the freeway when his truck rear-ended a Dodge pickup, forcing the vehicle onto a raised dirt embankment where it rolled over, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Krpikyan was thrown from the Dodge, in which he was a passenger. The vehicle’s driver was treated for head cuts and bruises.

Munoz took off, but was taken into custody after a witness spotted his vehicle in a driveway near the accident scene and called authorities.

Evidence presented at trial showed that Munoz’s blood-alcohol content was at least 0.20 percent — 2 1/2 times the legal limit — at the time of the crash.
