A Pomona man died and five other people were injured, including a baby, in a violent crash between a pickup truck and a car on the 60 Freeway in Diamond Bar early Sunday, officials said.

The deadly collision took place just after 3 a.m. on the eastbound freeway, just west of Diamond Bar Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A 29-year-old Pomona man died in the crash, which also left two women and a 1-year-old girl hospitalized with major injuries, Officer D. Sevilla of the CHP’s Baldwin Park-area office said in a statement.

A 2001 Chevrolet Impala had just been involved in a minor collision with another car and was disabled in the carpool lane just prior to the fatal crash, officials said. The Impala was being driven by a 30-year-old Pomona woman, with the 29-year-old Pomona man, the baby and the little girl riding as passengers.

A 2013 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck being driven by a 32-year-old Hesperia man approached the disabled Impala from behind, Sevilla said. A 31-year-old Hesperia woman rode as a passenger in the truck.

“Due to (the Silverado driver) driving at an unsafe speed for the existing traffic conditions, the front of the Chevrolet Silverado collided into the left rear of the Chevrolet Impala,” Sevilla said in the written statement.

The seatbelts of the man riding as her passenger and the baby had been unfastened following the previous crash, “and they were in the process of exiting their vehicle when the collision occurred,” Sevilla said.

Both the man and baby were thrown from the Impala in the crash, officials said. Paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene.

The woman and baby in the Impala were hospitalized with major injuries, while the 9-year-old boy suffered minor injuries, authorities said.

The driver of the Silverado suffered minor injuries, while the woman riding as his passenger suffered injuries described as major.

A man involved in the initial, non-fatal collision ran from the scene but was quickly found and arrested on suspicion of hit-and-run, CHP Officer Stephan Brandt said.

Any witnesses, or anyone with information, can reach the CHP’s Baldwin Park-area office at 626-338-1164.
