Nearly 90 motorists were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs in Riverside and San Bernardino counties over the New Year’s holiday weekend, the California Highway Patrol said Tuesday.
The CHP’s three-day “maximum enforcement period,” during which all available officers deployed to catch lawbreakers, concluded about midnight Monday, resulting in 30 arrests throughout the Riverside metro area and 55 arrests within San Bernardino County, according to the CHP.
Two people were killed in separate collisions within the Riverside CHP’s jurisdiction over the weekend. Two others were killed in Barstow and San Bernardino collisions, a CHP news release stated.
During last year’s New Year’s holiday period, 54 people were arrested on suspicion of impaired driving, and there were two fatalities in the two counties, according to figures from the CHP’s Inland Division.
The maximum enforcement period coincided with end-of-year enforcement campaigns waged by the sheriff’s departments in Riverside and San Bernardino counties, as well as multiple municipal police agencies that utilized saturation patrols and sobriety checkpoints to net drunken and drug-impaired drivers. Those campaigns also ended Monday night.
