A motorist killed in a fiery crash on the 10 Freeway in Pomona was an Upland resident, authorities said Monday.

The motorist was identified as Peter Van Ginkel, 57, coroner’s Lt. Larry Dietz said.

Van Ginkel’s car hit the center divider about 3:10 a.m. Saturday on the eastbound 10, west of Dudley Street, and his car stopped while straddling the line between the carpool lane and another lane, said Sgt. L.R. Borunda of the California Highway Patrol.

A 28-year-old man in a 2004 Mitsubishi did not see the disabled 1994 Toyota in front of him until it was too late, and his car struck the left side of the Toyota as he tried to brake and swerve, Borunda said. The Toyota burst into flames, with  the motorist inside unable to get out.
