Police arrested a woman Monday suspected of last week’s hit-and-run collision in San Bernardino that killed a pregnant pedestrian as she crossed the street in a marked crosswalk.
Police obtained an arrest warrant for Mercedes Vanesa Guevara as part of their comprehensive investigation for the driver of the dark-colored sedan that slammed into 39-year-old Maribel Gonzalez while she crossed Highland Avenue — north to south — at Medical Central Drive about 11:30 p.m. July 11, according to a San Bernardino police news release.
Guevara, 31, was located and arrested about 12:45 p.m. Monday in Corona, according to online jail records. She was booked into Central Detention Center in San Bernardino on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, the news release stated. She is being held in lieu of $200,000 bail.
Guevara is scheduled to make her initial court appearance Wednesday in San Bernardino Superior Court, according to jail records.
Police say Guevara drove through a red light at the intersection at a high rate of speed and struck Gonzalez while she was in the crosswalk. Guevara didn’t stop and help the victim, according to the police news release.
The suspect vehicle continued west on Highland Avenue, became disabled and stopped a short distance away. Police say Guevara got out of her car, was picked up a short time later by another vehicle and fled the area, the news release states.
Gonzalez and her unborn child were pronounced dead at the scene.
