LA VERNE — One person was killed and a second person was injured Sunday after a Cessna plane missed the runway at a La Verne airfield, authorities said.

A single-engine Cessna 177RG with two occupants crash-landed into a plant nursery while practicing approaches into the airport, said Ian Gregor, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration.
TV station KTLA reported a man died and a woman was injured as a result of the incident along the 1600 block of Puddingstone Drive.
One occupant of the plane died and another plane occupant was hospitalized in serious condition, La Verne police said in a statement.
The incident was reported at about 5:50 p.m. and happened near Brackett Field Airport, a public facility, according to La Verne police. That agency as well as the La Verne Fire Department responded.
The plane was registered to an address in Los Angeles. The name of the deceased person was withheld pending notification of kin.
There was no immediate word about the cause of the crash.
The crash was being investigated by La Verne police. Inspectors from the National Transportation Safety Board and the FAA also will be investigating the crash.
