A driver heading the wrong way on the eastbound 10 Freeway in West Covina died, and another motorist was injured when two vehicles collided head-on Monday morning.
Authorities have not released the name of the Los Angeles woman killed in the crash. The other driver, a 30-year-old Pomona resident, suffered moderate injuries and was taken to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center, California Highway Patrol Officer Rodrigo Jimenez said.
The wrong-way driver was in a 1997 Honda Civic going west in the eastbound lanes shortly before 3 a.m. The Civic crashed into a Mazda CX5 near the Citrus Avenue ramp, Jimenez said.
Witnesses reported the woman was honking at other vehicles as she drove slowly the wrong way, the CHP said. Both the woman’s vehicle and the vehicle she struck overturned in the left lanes, the CHP said.
Fog might have contributed to the incident, the CHP said.
The CHP shut down all eastbound lanes at 3:17 a.m. The lanes reopened at 5:38 a.m.
