A woman was struck and seriously injured by a hit- and-run driver while walking along a street west of Perris, authorities said Wednesday.
The victim, whose identity was not released, was hit sometime Tuesday night on Markham Street in Mead Valley, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Sgt. Dave Robles said Riverside County sheriff’s deputies were sent to investigate, initially believing the woman may have collapsed from a seizure.
However, on further examination, the deputies determined “it was something more than that,” Robles said.
He said that CHP officers were not alerted to the hit-and-run until Wednesday morning, after the victim had been taken to Riverside University Health System Medical Center in Moreno Valley for treatment.
Officers have been gathering whatever details they can but remain in the preliminary stages of the investigation.
No suspect has been identified, and the circumstances of what transpired remain unclear, according to the sergeant.
The victim’s injuries were not specified, but Robles said they were “pretty serious.”
