Two people were detained on suspicion of drug and gun violations when a vehicle crashed at the end of a police pursuit from Azusa to Rancho Cucamonga on Tuesday, authorities said.

At around 5 p.m. on Tuesday evening, officers with the Azusa Police Department attempted to stop a vehicle near Sixth Street and Angeleno Avenue in Azusa, the department said in a media release on Wednesday.

The two men in the car, identified by police as 38-year-old Dennis Ayon and 18-year-old Rudy Abasta, drove away from officers when officers attempted to stop the two in a traffic stop, according to police.

Officers with the Azusa Police Department, Pomona Police Department and Upland Police Department and deputies with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department engaged in the pursuit from Azusa to Rancho Cucamonga.

The chase proceeded on the 210 Freeway to the Milliken Avenue exit in Rancho Cucamonga; the suspects then went to the area of Victoria Park Lane and Kenyon Way where the chase ended.

“The pursuit ended when the suspect’s vehicle was involved in a traffic collision,” police said. “Both suspects were taken into custody after the pursuit.”

Ayon and Abasta were arrested by Azusa police at around 7:30 p.m.

Officials said detectives recovered a large quantity of illegal drugs and a loaded firearm from the vehicle.

Ayon and Abasta were booked into the Inmate Reception Center in Los Angeles, according to court records.

Police said the arrests were on suspicion of felony evading, transportation of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance for sale and possession of a controlled substance while armed.

Ayon was also arrested on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a handgun, officials said.

“Ayon was discovered to be on post-release community supervision for prior weapons violations,” police said. “Ayon was previously arrested on suspicion of felony evading, possession of a controlled substance for sale and transportation of a controlled substance while on post-release community supervision.”

Anyone with additional information can contact the Azusa Police Department Detective Bureau at 626-812-3200.

Ayon and Abasta are scheduled to appear at the Citrus Municipal Court in West Covina on Thursday morning, per court records.
