LOS ANGELES — A man who worked for the Department of Homeland Security pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges stemming from an alleged drunken crash on Interstate 10 in Pomona that left a man dead and a woman seriously injured.
Luis Angel Ureno, 28, is charged with one count each of vehicular manslaughter, driving under the influence causing injury and driving with a 0.08 percent blood-alcohol content causing injury.
Ureno was allegedly driving at a high rate of speed when he struck the back of a vehicle containing Hector Soltero and his wife, Roxana Pena Beltran, shortly after midnight Sept. 18, 2017, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. Soltero, 42, was killed, and his wife suffered major injuries.
Ureno worked as an officer with the Department of Homeland Security at the time, but his current status with the agency was not immediately clear, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
He is due back in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom on April 2, when a date is scheduled to be set for a hearing to determine if there is enough evidence to allow the case against him to proceed to trial.
Ureno could face up to nine years in state prison if convicted as charged in the case, which was filed Feb. 28, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
