One person was killed and another injured Tuesday morning in a crash in Cabazon.
The crash happened just after 10:05 a.m. on the east 10 Freeway, just east of Main Street, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Officials said a 56-year-old man from Albuquerque, N.M., died in the crash. Both he and a 51-year-old Torrance man had been driving east through the unincorporated area of Riverside County, the CHP said.
The 56-year-old man was driving a Ford F-250 pickup and had a 43-year-old woman in the passenger seat, the CHP said. The Torrance man was driving a Mercury Grand Marquis.
Authorities said the Torrance man was passing the Ford on the left and tried to change lanes before fully passing it.
“The right rear of the Mercury collided with the left front of the Ford,” the CHP said. “Both vehicles began to slide sideways, out of control, toward the south road edge of the 10 Freeway.”
The two vehicles rolled off the roadway, and both occupants in the Ford were trapped in the truck, according to the CHP. One of the vehicles ended up overturned on Railroad Avenue, just south of the freeway.
Authorities pronounced the Albuquerque man dead at the scene. His passenger was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center with serious injuries, officials said. The Torrance man was transported to San Gorgonio Memorial Hospital with minor injuries.
The Albuquerque man who died was later identified as Scott Fliegel.
The CHP said alcohol, drugs, distractions and/or mechanical failures have not been ruled out as contributing factors of the crash.
