One person died when two vehicles collided Monday in San Jacinto, authorities said.

The crash was at 3:42 a.m. at Gilman Springs Road at State Street, according to the California Highway Patrol.

One person was pronounced dead at the scene and paramedics took one moderately injured crash victim to a hospital by ground ambulance, fire officials said.

The CHP said a 46-year-old man from San Jacinto was driving a Chevrolet Camaro east on Gilman Springs Road, just east of Ramona Expressway, while a 58-year-old man from Calimesa was driving a Chrysler PT Cruiser west on Gilman Springs Road.

Preliminary reports from the CHP said the driver of the Camaro was driving at an unsafe speed as he tried to make a right turn. He crossed over into oncoming traffic and crashed into the PT Cruiser.

Officials said the driver of the Camaro died from the crash, while the driver of the PT Cruiser was transported to a Riverside University Health Systems Hospital with major injuries.

The CHP was investigating and said drugs and alcohol have not been ruled out as factors in the crash.
