Authorities identified a 41-year-old Moreno Valley man Tuesday, May 19, as the passenger of an off-roading vehicle who died in a crash in the mountains between Hemet and Idyllwild over the weekend.

Luis Alberto Lopez-Perez was riding in a Polaris RZR driven by Edgar Benjamin Lopez-Mauricio, 41, of Hawthorne at about 3:55 p.m. Sunday, May 17, California Highway Patrol officials said in a news release.

They were traveling along the San Jacinto Ridge Truck Trail north of Highway 74 when the vehicle left the unpaved roadway and went down a steep embankment. Preliminary investigation suggests both men were ejected from their seats.

Rescuers on foot searched the area with the aid of a helicopter, and found Lopez-Mauricio walking up a dirt embankment. He was airlifted to a hospital.

His passenger, Lopez-Perez, was found about 250 feet down the incline. The Moreno Valley man was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

Investigators do not believe drugs or alcohol played a role in the collision. Earlier reports had initially suggested that the crash happened along the Bee Canyon Truck Trail.
