A driver died and her passenger was injured Friday when a sport utility vehicle hit a tree and burst into flames near the eastbound 210 Freeway in Azusa.
The coroner’s office has not yet identified the driver. The 24-year-old Rancho Cucamonga woman was trapped in the burning SUV, according to California Highway Patrol Sgt. Jim Eberhart in a statement.
He said the passenger, a 33-year-old woman also from Rancho Cucamonga, was taken to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center with a broken left arm and chest pain.
The fatal crash occurred around 2:15 a.m.
A 2010 Mercedes GLK 250 was heading east on the 210 Freeway, west of Azusa Avenue, when it went off the road, struck a tree and caught fire, Eberhart said.
He said the passenger was able to get out of the SUV but not the driver.
The cause of the crash is under investigation, he added.
The southbound Azusa Avenue onramp to the eastbound 210 Freeway was closed for more than three hours before reopening about 5:25 a.m., the CHP said. Lanes of the freeway were not affected.
