A Highland woman was taken into custody on suspicion of a fatal hit-and-run in San Bernardino on Sunday that took the life of a motorcyclist, the San Bernardino Police Department reported.
Priscilla Ornelas Romero, 46, turned herself in to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department on Tuesday, Dec. 8, after learning 63-year-old victim Jeffrey Hewitt from San Bernardino had succumbed to his injuries, police reported. Sheriff’s detectives notified the Police Department and Romero was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run.
The crash happened at 4:37 p.m. on Sunday as Hewitt was riding a Harley-Davidson south on Arrowhead Avenue, approaching Alexander Avenue, when a Kia Optima heading north on Arrowhead made a left turn in front of the motorcycle, according to a police statement.
Hewitt’s daughter, Crystal Ortiz, said that he was just seven blocks away from her house as he was on his way to visit her and his six grandchildren when the crash occurred. Ortiz said he was coming to check on them following the anniversary of her mother’s death the day prior.
“He was all we had left. He was our world; the best papa ever!” Ortiz said. “My kids can’t accept nor comprehend this tragedy.”
