18-year-old driver dies in Riverside when vehicle hits pole

An 18-year-old man died early Saturday, Jan. 23, when the sports car he was driving crashed into a street light pole in Riverside.

The crash happened at 12:24 a.m. near Van Buren Boulevard and Mason Street, according to Riverside police.

The Riverside resident driving a silver 2004 Nissan 350Z was pronounced dead at the scene. He was later identified as Steven Garibay by Riverside County Coroner’s officials.

The driver lost control of the vehicle while southbound on Van Buren Boulevard approaching Mason Street, police said.

Drugs and alcohol were not believed to have contributed to the crash, police said.
