Boy, 14, driving SUV runs stop sign before fatal collision in Hesperia, officials say

A 59-year-old driver died after a 14-year-old boy driving an SUV ran a stop sign in Hesperia and collided with two other cars on Thursday, July 22, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said.

The crash was reported at 7 a.m. at the intersection of Choiceana Avenue and Yucca Street.

Investigators say the boy was driving a 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe west on Yucca when he failed to stop. He was broadsided by a 2008 Honda Civic driven by a 55-year-old man headed north on Choiceana and a 2020 Kia Sportage traveling south on Choiceana, a news release said.

The Kia driver died at a hospital, the release said. The Coroner’s Office identified him as Craig Sale, 59, of Hesperia.

With limited exceptions, a person must be at least 16 years old in California to obtain a driver’s license. Deputy Nathan Campos, a sheriff’s spokesman, said Friday that no information was available on why the underage boy was driving or whether his parents are being investigated. The release did not identify the boy.
