Two children, ages 1 and 16, died when they were thrown from a pickup truck after a collision in Menifee on Wednesday, Oct. 14, that resulted in the arrest of the driver of the other truck, the Menifee Police Department said.
Logan Schell, 18, of Corona was booked on suspicion of misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter and then cited and released, the Riverside County jail log shows.
The collision was reported about 5:20 p.m. on Domenigoni Parkway near Lindenberger Road. Investigators said the truck the children were riding in, a Chevrolet Silverado towing a trailer, and a Ford F-150 pickup were headed west on Domenigoni when Shell’s Ford veered out of its lane and struck the driver’s side of the Chevrolet, police said in a news release.
“As a result of the collision, the Chevrolet lost control, crossed over the center divider and rolled onto its side where the two juveniles were ejected from the cab of the truck,” the release said.
The two children died at the scene. The 1-year-old, a boy, was identified by the Riverside County Coroner’s Office as Legend Aries Girard of San Jacinto. The name of the 16-year-old had not been publicly announced as of Thursday afternoon.
The driver of the Chevrolet had minor injuries and declined medical treatment; two passengers in that truck were hospitalized with minor injuries.
Schell was not injured, the release said. He was not believed to have been under the influence, Capt. Dave Gutierrez said.
