2 killed in collision in San Bernardino

Two people were killed after their cars collided in San Bernardino early Sunday, Dec. 12, police said.

Around 2 a.m., a 34-year-old Highland man was driving a 1997 Mercedes-Benz at high speeds westbound on Rialto Avenue from Macy Street, San Bernardino police said in a news release. A 2006 Honda Civic, driven by a 64-year-old man from Yucaipa, was heading east on Rialto Avenue from Meridian Avenue.

Both drivers were the sole occupants of their cars.

The driver of the Mercedes lost control and crossed the double yellow line into oncoming traffic, sliding into the path of the Honda. The Mercedes was broadsided by the Honda and, as a result of the collision, the Mercedes was separated into two halves. The driver of the Mercedes was ejected onto the roadway.

Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene. The victims have not been publicly identified, pending notification of family.

The cause of the collision is under investigation and both alcohol and speed were factors in it, police said.
