On Saturday, March 12, 2022 at approximately 10:30 a.m., officers were dispatched to the intersection of Lakewood Boulevard and Wardlow Road regarding a solo vehicle traffic collision with the vehicle on fire, which resulted in the death of a male adult.
Upon arrival, officers located a 2016 Cadillac sport utility vehicle, which had struck a City of Long Beach traffic signal before overturning and striking a tree. Citizens in the area were able to extinguish the fire using fire extinguishers. Officers located a male subject trapped inside of the vehicle and attempted to extricate him. While attempting to extricate the driver, the Long Beach Fire Department arrived on scene and extricated the driver from the vehicle. They provided life-saving measures and transported the driver to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The driver has not been identified. The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office will assist with identification and notifying the next of kin.
The preliminary investigation revealed the 2016 Cadillac sport utility vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed southbound on Lakewood Boulevard when it struck the center median, north of Wardlow Road. The vehicle traveled southeast across northbound lanes of Lakewood Boulevard before striking the traffic signal on the northeast corner of the intersection. The impact with the traffic signal caused the vehicle to spin and roll over, crossing Wardlow Road. The vehicle ended up striking a tree along the south side of Wardlow Road, east of Lakewood Boulevard.
The investigation is ongoing.
