A vehicle crash on southbound Interstate 880 near the Decoto Road off-ramp in Hayward left one person dead early Tuesday morning.
According to California Highway Patrol dispatch logs, the fatality was reported at 4:01 a.m. An ambulance was notified at 4:04 a.m. and again at 4:13 a.m.
CHP units were assigned at 4:04 a.m. and began arriving on scene by 4:12 a.m. Dispatch logs noted a white van and sedan blocking the No. 1 lane on southbound Interstate 880 just south of Decoto Road. All lanes were blocked by 4:10 a.m., with a traffic break requested from Alvarado Boulevard.
By 4:22 a.m., the crash was blocking the Nos. 1 and 2 lanes, with other lanes open. A CHP supervisor requested Caltrans to post messages about the lane blockages, with an unknown estimated time of reopening.
A tow truck was requested at 4:37 a.m. for a Toyota sedan with major front-end damage, and Pro Star Towing was notified. Another tow truck was requested at 5:01 a.m., and Jack James Tow was notified.
CHP units began clearing the scene at 5:15 a.m., with the last unit clearing at 5:32 a.m.
Identities of those involved and the cause of the crash were not immediately available.
