A fatal crash on the southbound Interstate 110 near West Imperial Highway in South Los Angeles killed at least one person late Friday night, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred at approximately 11:38 p.m. in the southbound lanes just north of Imperial Highway. Initial reports indicated a male pedestrian, described as wearing a black shirt and gray pants, was seen crying and standing in the middle lanes of the freeway. Multiple vehicles stopped in the area as the pedestrian attempted to cross from the center divider to the right shoulder.
Emergency crews from the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to the scene after receiving reports of the incident. Firefighters confirmed the fatality at 11:54 p.m. and notified CHP officers. Authorities requested a hard closure of the affected lanes to allow emergency personnel to investigate and clear the scene.
Traffic quickly backed up as several vehicles remained stopped in the middle lanes following the crash. CHP officers coordinated with Caltrans to implement a full closure of the southbound lanes at the Imperial Highway off-ramp. The closure remained in place for several hours as investigators worked to determine the sequence of events leading to the fatality.
No additional injuries were reported, and officials have not released the identity of the person killed. The circumstances surrounding the pedestrian’s presence on the freeway remain under investigation. Authorities have not indicated whether any of the drivers involved remained at the scene or if impairment played a role.
The crash prompted significant delays for southbound traffic on Interstate 110 late into the night. The California Highway Patrol urges anyone with information about the incident to contact their South Los Angeles office.
