A man killed late Monday on the 105 Freeway’s transfer to the 110 Freeway in South Los Angeles, was walking in the high shoulder before the deadly crash, according to California Highway Patrol dispatch logs.
CHP officers were dispatched to the freeway interchange just before 11 p.m. after a 911 caller reported someone walking on the freeway’s right high shoulder.
Before CHP units could respond to reports of the pedestrian, a 911-caller reported the man had been hit by a vehicle and was down in the roadway.
A tractor trailer, red Honda Civic, white Infinity G37 and Kia Optima pulled to the side of the Freeway.
One report indicates the red Honda Civic hit the pedestrian, while other callers believed their respective vehicles struck an animal in the roadway.
It’s unclear whether those vehicles hit the pedestrian or if an animal was also struck. It’s also unclear why the man was walking on the freeway. The initial 911 caller said they did not see a broken down vehicle nearby.
At 11:21 p.m. the first CHP unit arrived at the scene. A medical examiner from the coroner’s office was dispatched at 11:27 p.m., according to CHP dispatch logs.
The man was described as a Latino, about 40-years-old, wearing sweats and a beanie. He stood about 5’7″ and weighed about 200 pounds. The Los Angeles County Coroner will attempt to identify the man and contact his next-of-kin prior to publicly identifying him.
