Law enforcement cadet in ‘grave condition’ after being struck by SUV during training run

One of four Los Angeles County law enforcement cadets, who was seriously injured when a sport utility vehicle plowed into a group of about 75 recruits on a training run, remains on life support, in what authorities are calling “grave” condition.

The cadet was seriously injured when a Honda CRV travelling south veered across Mills Avenue mowing down a group of about 75 law enforcement recruits, who were on a training run at about 6:30 a.m. Wednesday near Telegraph Road. The crash occurred just blocks from the sheriff’s STARS Explorer Academy law enforcement training center

The motorist who struck the group of cadets, claims he fell asleep at the wheel. Nicholas Joseph Gutierrez, 22, of Diamond Bar, said he only woke up to the sound of cadets banging on the windows of his CRV.

While Gutierrez was initially arrested on suspicion of attempted murder of a peace officer, he was later released from custody without prosecutors filing charges. He passed a breathalyzer test at the scene, but an investigation of the wreck remains ongoing.

Three other cadets remain in critical condition.
