Take extra care while driving as we fall back to shorter days.
We run a number of hazards when we drive at night, including weariness, impaired drivers, rush hour, and reduced night vision. According to NSC study of NHTSA data, these dangers become increasingly evident as the weekend approaches, with fatal collisions spiking on Saturday evenings.
Many individuals may find themselves spending more time traveling in the dark once Daylight Saving Time ends, which for 2022 is 2 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 6. In the dark, depth perception, color recognition, and peripheral vision can be impaired, and the brightness of oncoming headlights can briefly blind a driver.
Moreover, driving at night is risky since vision is only roughly 500 feet even with high beam headlights on (as opposed to 250 feet with regular headlights), which leaves drivers with little time to react to obstacles in the road, especially when traveling at faster speeds.
What can you do to fight the night?
- Make sure your headlights are clean and adjusted in the right direction.
- Dim the dashboard.
- Avoid focusing on approaching lights.
- Make sure your glasses are anti-reflective if you wear them.
- Remove streaks from the windshield by cleaning it.
- Due to poor visibility and shorter stopping distance, slow down.
