Oakland PD Fires Officer After Speeding in Crash

Last Updated on December 27, 2022 by C-CAR

The Oakland police department fired an officer after investigators reported he lied in a written statement about a crash and injure he caused while speeding, according to published reports.

Officer Victor Adrian Garcia was driving at faster than 70 miles per hour without running his sirens or lights when he crashed into another vehicle in the 8000 block of International Boulevard on Oct. 10, 2020.

According to an internal affairs report, an officer investigating the crash in late January 2021 noted conflicting statements, including the officer’s claim that his cruiser was doing about 25 mph while a witness estimated a speed closer to 60.

The patrol vehicle’s black-box data recorded 70.7 mph about 1.5 seconds before the crash. The cruiser braked hard, reaching 40.6 mph at impact, but was still well above the 25 mph speed limit.
