On Friday, Feb. 18, 2022 at approximately 7:42 a.m., officers were dispatched to the intersection of Oregon Avenue and 17th Street regarding an injury traffic collision between a vehicle and a bicyclist, which resulted in the death of a male bicyclist.
Upon arrival, officers located a Ford F250 truck owned by the City of Long Beach which had struck a bicyclist. Officers began to check the well-being of the bicyclist when the Long Beach Fire Department arrived on scene. The Long Beach Fire personnel determined the bicyclist was deceased at the scene.
The preliminary investigation revealed the bicyclist was traveling westbound on 17th Street and did not stop for a stop sign at Oregon Avenue. The driver of the Ford truck was traveling southbound on Oregon Avenue as the bicyclist ran the stop sign and the Ford stuck the bicyclist in the middle of the intersection.
The driver of the Ford truck was identified as 59-year-old male employee of the City of Long Beach who stayed on scene and cooperated with the investigation. Distracted driving, impaired driving, and speed are not believed to be a factor in this collision.
The bicyclist has not been identified and the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office will conduct their own investigation, identify the bicyclist, and notify next of kin.
The investigation is ongoing.
