TRAFFIC FATALITY – BELLFLOWER BOULEVARD AND BEACH DRIVE

Last Updated on September 27, 2022 by CCAR Staff

CORRECTION: The fatal collision occurred on Jan. 21, 2022, not Jan. 22, 2022 as originally reported, and has been corrected below.

On Jan. 21, 2022 at approximately 5:47 p.m., officers responded to an injury traffic collision in the area of Bellflower Boulevard and Beach Drive, resulting in the death of a male adult.

Upon arrival, officers discovered a pedestrian had been struck by two vehicles. The preliminary investigation revealed a 2002 Acura sedan driven by a 17-year-old male resident of Long Beach was traveling southbound on Bellflower Boulevard when he struck a pedestrian who was attempting to cross Bellflower Boulevard outside of a crosswalk. Immediately after the Acura struck the pedestrian, a 2005 Honda Pilot driven by a 59-year-old male resident of Long Beach, also struck the pedestrian. Both drivers remained on scene and cooperated with the investigation. The Long Beach Fire Department responded and determined the pedestrian had succumbed to their injuries at the scene.

A Los Angeles County Coroner Investigator responded and will assist detectives in identifying the pedestrian. It is believed the pedestrian was currently experiencing homelessness and was not a student at CSULB.

The 17-year-old driver did not have a driver’s license. He was identified by his parent as well as a school ID and was subsequently released to his parent at the scene. The 59-year-old driver was identified with his valid California driver’s license and was released at the scene.

Distracted driving, speeding and impairment do not appear to have been a factor in this collision.
