On Sunday February 2, 2020, at approximately 7:30 p.m., officers responded to an injury traffic collision at Pacific Coast Highway and Caspian Avenue involving a vehicle and a pedestrian, that ultimately resulted in the death of a male adult.
Upon arrival, officers located a male adult pedestrian in the roadway having sustained injuries to his upper torso. Long Beach Fire Department personnel arrived on scene, began administering medical aid and transported the pedestrian to a local hospital in critical condition. The pedestrian later succumbed to his injuries. The pedestrian will be identified by the Los Angeles Coroner’s Office.
The preliminary investigation revealed a 1998 Toyota Camry, driven by a 56-year-old male resident of the City of Wilmington, was traveling westbound on Pacific Coast Highway. The driver then struck a male pedestrian who was crossing northbound Pacific Coast Highway in an unmarked crosswalk at Caspian Avenue.
It is possible the pedestrian was then struck by a red Chevrolet Tahoe. The Chevrolet Tahoe left the scene westbound out of city limits. At approximately 11:30 p.m., officers recovered the unoccupied Chevrolet Tahoe in the City of Lomita.
The driver of the Toyota Camry remained on scene and cooperated with the investigation. Cell phone distraction and/or DUI are not considered factors with this driver.
