TRAFFIC FATALITY – ARTESIA BOULEVARD AND ATLANTIC AVENUE

Last Updated on September 26, 2022 by CCAR Staff

On Tuesday, February 4, 2020 at approximately 6:20 p.m., officers responded to an injury traffic collision in the area of Artesia Blvd. and Atlantic Ave. involving a vehicle and a pedestrian, which resulted in the death of a male adult.

Upon arrival, officers located several vehicles stopped on Artesia Blvd. 500 feet west of Atlantic Ave. and a pedestrian lying in the roadway. Long Beach Fire personnel arrived on scene and administered medical aid to the pedestrian, who succumbed to his injuries at the scene. No other parties were injured due to the collision.

The preliminary investigation revealed a male pedestrian was standing in the roadway outside of a marked crosswalk in the number one westbound lane of Artesia Blvd. when he was struck by a 2006 GMC Yukon. The pedestrian was wearing a dark jacket and blue jeans. The Yukon was traveling at approximately 35 mph when the driver, an 18-year-old male resident of Long Beach, saw the pedestrian standing near the raised center median of Artesia Blvd. The driver attempted to avoid hitting the pedestrian but was unable to and hit the pedestrian with the left front portion of his vehicle. The pedestrian was pushed southbound across the center median where he fell into the number one lane of eastbound Artesia Blvd. and was struck by a second vehicle that was traveling eastbound on Artesia Blvd.

Both drivers stopped, administered aid to the pedestrian, and cooperated with the investigation of the collision. There is no indication that distracted driving or inattention played a role in the collision. DUI or impairment also do not appear to be factors in the collision. Both drivers had valid licenses and proof of insurance.

The pedestrian will be identified by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office, who will also notify the next of kin.

Anyone with information regarding the collision is asked to contact Long Beach Police Department Collision Investigation Detail Detective Steve Fox at (562) 570-7355.
