TRAFFIC FATALITY

On Saturday, June 17, 2017, at approx. 1:10 a.m., officers were dispatched to Atlantic Avenue and Market Street regarding a traffic collision between a vehicle and a male adult pedestrian, which ultimately resulted in the death of the pedestrian.

When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered the pedestrian lying unconscious on Atlantic Avenue. He was transported to a local hospital by Long Beach Fire Department paramedics, where he was listed in critical condition.

Based on independent witness statements, the investigation revealed that a 2006 Nissan Altima, being driven by a 20-year-old Long Beach resident, was traveling north on Atlantic Avenue and passed through the intersection at Market Street on a green light. As the Nissan entered the crosswalk on the north side of the intersection, he struck the pedestrian, who was crossing eastbound Atlantic Avenue against the “Don’t Walk” signal. After striking the pedestrian, the driver of the Nissan stopped, exited the vehicle, and went back to assist the pedestrian.

The driver of the Nissan had a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance.

On June 19, 2017, the Police Department was notified that the pedestrian, only being identified as a 59-year-old resident of Long Beach, pending notification of next of kin, succumbed to injuries sustained in the collision.
