On August 4, 2020 at approximately 12:30 a.m., officers responded to the intersection of Long Beach Boulevard and Del Amo Boulevard regarding a single vehicle collision, which resulted in the death of a male adult.
Upon arrival, officers observed a single vehicle collision involving a Jeep Commander, which had collided with a street light. The driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was unconscious and non-responsive. Officers began began life-saving measures until Long Beach Fire Department personnel responded and transported the driver to a local hospital.
Witnesses informed officers that there were no unusual contributing factors to the collision, leading officers to believe the driver had experienced some type of medical emergency.
On August 6, 2020, detectives from the Long Beach Collision Investigation Detail were notified that the driver had succumbed to his injuries. The driver was identified as Rodolfo Cruz, a 45-year-old resident of Compton.
At the time of the collision it was not known if the cause was due to a medical condition or otherwise. On November 2, 2020, detectives were notified that the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office determined Mr. Cruz died as a result of the collision.
It is not believed drugs, alcohol, or distracted driving were a factor in the collision.
