On July 9, 2022 at approximately 8:57 a.m., officers from the Long Beach Police Department responded to an injury traffic collision in the northbound lanes of Lakewood Boulevard at the 405 Freeway, which resulted in the death of a male adult.
Upon arrival, officers observed bystanders rendering aid to a driver inside a vehicle. Officers and Long Beach Fire Department personnel took over medical aid until the driver was extricated from the vehicle and transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
The preliminary investigation revealed a 2007 Kia Spectra, driven by a 68-year-old resident of Los Angeles, was traveling northbound on Lakewood Boulevard at a high rate of speed when he rear-ended a 2016 Toyota Corolla, driven by a 32-year-old resident of Bellflower, also traveling northbound. The Kia drove onto the center median and collided with a support pillar for the 405 Freeway.
The driver of the Toyota did not initially realize he had been rear-ended and returned to the scene shortly after. He cooperated with the investigation and no charges are pending.
The identity of the Kia driver is being withheld, pending the notification of next of kin. At this time, speed appears to be a factor in the collision. Distracted driving and impaired driving are not believed to be factors in the collision.
