On Tuesday, May 5, 2020 at approximately 9:55 a.m., officers from the Long Beach Police Department were dispatched to the area of Atlantic Avenue and 20th Street regarding an injury traffic collision between two vehicles.
Upon arrival, officers located both vehicles with one driver trapped inside his vehicle. The trapped driver had sustained severe injuries as a result of the collision.
Long Beach Fire personnel arrived on scene and administered medical aid to the injured driver. The driver succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The driver of the other vehicle was not injured.
The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2008 Lexus ES350 was traveling southbound on Atlantic Avenue. That vehicle was being driven by a 42-year-old, male resident of Coto De Caza who, while traveling in the number one lane broadsided a 1999 Toyota Camry, which was making a left turn from eastbound Rhea Street to northbound Atlantic Avenue. The force of the impact pushed the Toyota Camry into a unoccupied vehicle parked along the east curb of Atlantic Avenue south of Rhea Street. The collision resulted in the death of the driver of the Toyota Camry, who is being identified as 26-year-old Christopher L. Goldman, a resident of Long Beach.
The driver of the Lexus ES350 was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs and it is unknown at this time whether distracted driving was a factor in the collision.
