A man and a woman from Pacoima died early Saturday morning in Colton after another driver hit their car stopped on the 10 Freeway, sending them careening down an embankment.
The crash at around 2 a.m. occurred when the driver of a Toyota Camry merged to the right, then slammed into the Nissan Sentra that was sitting on the freeway shoulder just east of Pepper Avenue.
The force of the crash overturned the Sentra and sent it tumbling down the embankment, the California Highway Patrol said.
The Sentra driver, Jose Carranza, 54, and passenger Milagro Nieto-Campos, 59, both of Pacoima, died at the scene.
CHP officials said officers who arrived believed the driver of the Camry was drunk and arrested her.
Police haven’t said why they think Carranza and Nieto-Campos were stopped.
