San Bernardino man accused of hit-and-run after pedestrian is struck and dies

A San Bernardino resident was arrested early Monday, Oct. 4, after police say he drove away from a drunken-driving collision that killed a pedestrian.

Diego Eduardo Cachua, 25, was booked on suspicion of driving under the influence causing injury or death, hit-and-run causing injury or death and DUI, the San Bernardino County jail log shows. Cachua was being held without bail at Central Detention Center in San Bernardino.

The pedestrian died at 2:17 a.m. Monday at Loma Linda University Medical Center, the Coroner’s Office said. His name was being withheld until relatives could be notified.

The collision was reported at 10:41 p.m. Sunday. A witness said she saw a car strike the pedestrian near Rialto Avenue and Waterman Avenue, the San Bernardino Police Department said. Officers arrived to find the victim lying in the road.

The witness followed the car south on Waterman and onto the westbound 10 Freeway. The California Highway Patrol stopped the car on the 10 at Euclid Avenue in Ontario. San Bernardino police gave the driver — later identified as Cachua — a sobriety test, which police said he failed.
