A driver died in Jurupa Valley early Sunday, Aug. 22, after crashing into two traffic signal poles and being ejected from his car, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said.
The crash was reported at 4:03 a.m. at the intersection of Clay Street and General Drive, the Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department said. Deputies responded around 4:25 a.m. to find the driver had been ejected after striking a curb and two traffic signal poles, the Sheriff’s Department said.
The ejected driver, later identified by coroner officials as Damien Lopez Villa of Jurupa Valley, 22, was the sole occupant and was pronounced dead on the scene, the Sheriff’s Department said.
A preliminary investigation indicated Lopez Villa was traveling south on Clay Street at high speed south when he lost control of his car, struck a curb and then a traffic signal pole, crossed an intersection and collided with a second pole, the Sheriff’s Department said.
Both directions of Clay Street between Van Buren Boulevard and Linares Avenue were temporarily closed before being reopened later Sunday.
